NSBL Captain’s Guide
Everything you need from registering as a captain to uploading a scoresheet after a match. Follow the steps in order — no technical know-how needed.
Step 1: Add the app to your phone’s home screen
The captain app opens in your phone’s browser, but once it’s on your home screen it works and feels just like a normal app — you just tap its icon. Visit https://nsbl.uk/nsbl-app.html
On an iPhone (Safari):
- Open Safari and go to the app link.
- Tap the Share icon at the bottom of the screen (the square with an arrow pointing up).
- Scroll down the menu that appears and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap Add in the top-right corner.
- The app icon now appears on your home screen like any other app.
Note: this only works in Safari. If you open the link in Chrome on an iPhone, the “Add to Home Screen” option won’t appear — switch to Safari first.
On an Android phone (Chrome):
- Open Chrome and go to the app link.
- Tap the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Add to Home screen (or Install app, depending on your phone).
- Tap Add / Install to confirm.
- The app icon now appears on your home screen.
From now on, just tap that icon to open the app — you won’t need to search for the website again.
Step 2: Register as a captain
- Open the app from your home screen icon.
- Tap Register (or Sign up) and enter your name, email address and the team you captain.
- Submit the form.
- Your account is created straight away, but you won’t be able to upload scoresheets yet.
Important: after you register, the league secretary needs to manually switch on your captain permissions. This isn’t instant — please allow a day or two after registering before you need to upload your first scoresheet. If it’s close to match day and you haven’t heard anything, give your league secretary a nudge.
Step 3: Check and update your player list
This is the single most important step. The app matches names on your scoresheet against your team’s player list to work out who played and update everyone’s stats. If a player on your scoresheet isn’t on the list — or their name is spelled differently — the upload can fail, or worse, record the result against the wrong player.
- Open the app and go to My Team (or Players).
- Check every player who might play for you this season is listed, with their name spelled exactly as it will appear on the scoresheet.
- If someone is missing, tap Add Player and enter their name.
- If a name is spelled wrong, tap the player and correct it.
- Do this check before every match where a new or different player is playing — not just once at the start of the season.
If you’re not sure whether a player is already registered, check with your league secretary before adding them again — duplicate entries cause the same problems as missing ones.
Step 4: Upload a scoresheet after a match
- Fill in the paper scoresheet as normal during the match, writing clearly.
- Open the app from your home screen and tap Upload Scoresheet.
- Take a clear, well-lit photo of the scoresheet (or choose one from your camera roll). Make sure:
- The whole sheet is in the frame, not cropped.
- There’s no glare or shadow across the writing.
- The photo is in focus — blurry handwriting is the biggest cause of upload errors.
- Tap Submit. The app reads the sheet automatically and shows you the result it’s worked out.
- Check the result against the paper sheet before confirming — scores, player names and the final result. If anything looks wrong, you can retake the photo or correct it manually.
- Tap Confirm once you’re happy it’s correct. The result is then saved to the website.
If the upload fails or the result looks wrong, the most common cause is a player name that doesn’t match your player list exactly — see Step 3.
Troubleshooting and FAQs
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Can’t upload a scoresheet after registering | Permissions haven’t been switched on yet | Wait for your league secretary to activate your account, then try again |
| Scores or players look wrong after upload | Photo was blurry, glared, or a player name didn’t match | Retake the photo in good light, or check Step 3 for name spelling |
| “Add to Home Screen” option missing on iPhone | You’re using Chrome instead of Safari | Open the link in Safari instead |
| A player isn’t showing in my team list | They haven’t been added yet | Add them yourself (Step 3), or check with your league secretary if you think they’re already registered |
Still stuck? Contact your league secretary with a description of what happened and, if possible, a screenshot.
